Update - July 11, 2021 - Major System Update

We've got a big update for Shatterkin!

Today's update includes some major adjustments to some elements of the core mechanics —

  • Players now transfer control of their Shatterkin to a different player at the beginning of each play cycle. You still control your human character, but now another player will be controlling the Shatterkin that's bonded to you. You can still issue commands to your shatterkin, but they may more may not follow, depending on the current level of your Trust and Bond dice. And with another player controlling your bonded Shatterkin, you can actually explore the relationship between the two characters without having a conversation with yourself!
  • Introduced the "Boost" mechanic, a variable feature that combines and streamlines the bonuses you can get from pushing, double dares, assists, and elements.
  • Rebranded the human kid characters as "Gemhearts". When they bond with their shatterkin, it has literally transformed their hearts into crystals. It's this crystal gemheart, representative of your bond, that allows your human character to understand and communicate with Shatterkin, and might have additional functions down the road. And, yes, I wanted the name to sound a little cheesy.
  • Added a "Peril" mechanic, which measures the danger your Gemheart character is in. When the Peril gauge is filled, your Shatterkin is forced to come to the rescue.
  • Reviewed the entire text of the core rules, and made a variety of rewrites and clarifications, and reorganized several sections.
  • Created a "Gemheart Sheet" to track your human character separate from your bonded Shatterkin.  The actions ratings and rights/wrongs are still the same between human and shatterkin, but now there's a separate sheet to reference while your bonded Shatterkin's sheet is under the control of another player.
  • Created a sheet to help keep track of features like Position and Power Level, as well as to provide a reference for various game mechanics.
  • Completed two maps — a map of Fernwood, and a map of the surrounding area.
  • Created some 3D-printable tokens that work with the tracking sheet. These are in .stl format.
  • Split the cards into a separate document from the sheets, to make it a little easier to print separately (especially if you prefer a heavier paper weight for printing out the cards).

I hope you enjoy this update!

Hello, is there a chance we could see a Fillable Character Sheet appearing? :D This game looks very fun!

is "gemheart" a slight reference to a certain popular fantasy book series?

(+1)

Not intentionally! I had forgotten that said popular fantasy book series even had something called gemhearts. And the context is different enough that I'm not worried about the name being used there.
